Every parent knows how important a good night’s sleep if kids are going to be happy and productive during the day. And if your kids aren’t sleeping, you probably aren’t either! Whether the issue is getting kids to fall asleep at night, or helping them STAY asleep, essential oils can be REALLY helpful. Click here to watch a short video on how to use essential oils to help kids sleep.

Many children need a bedtime routine to help them wind down and prepare for sleep and essential oils can easily be incorporated in this routine. Here is the routine I have found very helpful to help my little ones unwind and relax:

1. I add Lavender and Peace and Calming* to their bath (how to get quality oils wholesale). I do this by putting five drops of each into about 1/4 cup of epsom salt, which helps emulsify the oils, since oils don’t mix well with water alone. I sprinkle this into a warm bath. It smells wonderful and begins the winding down process.

2. I start the diffuser and add 5 to 10 drops of Lavender and/or Peace and Calming* and diffuse in their room while getting their pajamas on and reading their goodnight stories. I turn the diffuser light off (unless the child needs a nightlight, in which case, it’s perfect!) when it is time to go to sleep, but leave the diffuser running.

3. I keep a “goodnight massage oil” made of Lavender and Peace and Calming* diluted with coconut oil or another carrier oil ready and then give them a short foot or back massage with it.

I have found this extremely helpful in calming (even my very spirited child) down and relaxing her before bed. She falls asleep faster and stays asleep better.

I hope this information is helpful. Please note, that these essential oil remedies will only be effective with good quality, therapeutic grade essential oils. I had a terrible experience of putting essential oils from the local health food store in my child’s bath and then he broke out in hives (even though the oil was labeled 100% pure). I researched thoroughly to find the best oils available and now I recommend Young Living Essential Oils because of their exceptional quality and purity standards. *In a few cases Peace and Calming has led to very vivid dreams that were NOT calming. One theory about this is that the oils in Peace and Calming may help release negative emotions and if a person has a lot of pent up negative emotions, the process of releasing them may be almost like an emotional “detox”, causing some emotional discomfort as the are let out. However, I am not a psychologist, doctor or counselor. I am just a mom, sharing my experiences of what worked and continues to work for my own child.
