Mint, Grapefruit and Honey Lip Balm

Lip balm is one of those things I never go anywhere without. I have always loved it, but even when I was a little girl, I remember putting on cheap lip balms and feeling the back of my throat tickle. As I got older I realized this was from chemical additives used to flavor and scent the lip balms and I learned I could avoid this by buying more expensive, all natural lip balms. But these are expensive. Recently, I took the plunge and learned how to make my own. It is surprisingly easy.

DIY Lip BalmMint, Grapefruit and Honey

I worked out a few kinks in my recipe and now I am ready to share it. I use different essential oils depending on the desired effect (or scent).

Ingredients:

3 TBSP organic beeswax

3 TBSP coconut oil

1 TBSP almond oil (or other carrier oil of your choice)

1 tsp raw Honey

5 drops of therapeutic grade Grapefruit Essential Oil (where I get my essential oils wholesale)

15 drops therapeutic grade peppermint essential oil (where I get my essential oils wholesale)

Directions:

Make sure you have your containers ready and open before you start. Once you heat the mixture, you have to pour quickly before it hardens. If you are using lip balm tubes, secure them all together with a rubber band.

Heat coconut oil and beeswax in a double boiler (or be like me and use a glass bowl over a saucepan of simmering water). Stir over simmering water until the beeswax melts and it is all liquid. Be patient. It can take over 5 minutes. Once it is liquid, remove from heat and add the honey, almond oil and essential oils, stir well and pour IMMEDIATELY into containers. I do not recommend using a funnel or dropper as these clog up quickly. Oh, the mess I made learning that the hard way!!! Just eyeball it and be careful. The liquid will set and become solid in a few minutes. Voila! Ready to use!

Be aware that Grapefruit oil, as a citrus oil is photosensitive, so this is not a good blend if you will be spending a lot of time in the sunshine. Feel free to substitute with more peppermint or another essential oil of your choice. This blend however, is surprising refreshing and soothing at the same time.

Please only use therapeutic grade essential oils in recipes that you will be putting on your body, as your skin absorbs them and they will enter your bloodstream. Want to learn more about essential oils? Join our conversation on Facebook, in the Cheerfully Imperfect Essential Oils group.
