Non-Toxic DIY Flea Shampoo
Last time I was pregnant they warned me not to put the monthly flea application on my dog because it could cause birth defects! Yikes! So, if this pesticide is so strong that it can cause birth defects in humans just by touching it and getting it on my skin, what is it doing to my poor dog as it soaks in to repel fleas? I kept using it that year, not sure what else to do since we live in Texas and it would be cruel to NOT treat a dog for fleas. But this year I have found a much better solution.
I started using essential oils for my own family to keep us healthy and to replace a lot of the toxic chemicals in and around the home. In the process of researching good quality oils for my family (where I get my essential oils), I found out that most of the essential oils that work on humans are also safe and effective for dogs. I can use the Peace and Calming blend if my sweet girl is stressed out or upset and I can treat any wounds she receives with the same essential oils I use on my family. And since she is part of our family, that is perfect.
So, I was excited to find out that there are essential oils that repel bugs. I actually use the same essential oils in this DIY flea shampoo as I use in my DIY bug spray. So here it is:
DIY Flea Shampoo
1 cup liquid castile soap
20 drops Purification Essential oil (Where I get my essential oils wholesale)
10 drops Peppermint Essential Oil (Where I get my essential oils wholesale)
1 cup water
Mix well and use as needed while bathing your fluffy friend. I add the water to make the shampoo go further on my large, very furry dog. Obviously the amount you use on your dog will vary based on size and amount of fur.
Please do not use this recipe on cats, as cats livers cannot break down the oils the same way humans and dogs do.
How do you take care of your furry friends! Please do share in the comments!

Is the dog in the pic yours? If so, what kind is it? It looks just like our dog, but we don’t know what kind she is.

This is a fabulous recipe – thanks for sharing! Our dog is mostly inside but no matter how clean she is, she keeps getting flees and it has become quite costly for all the anti-flea products (which don’t seem to be that effective anyway).
