Ever since deciding that we want to convert a school bus into a traveling vacation home for our family of 7 (once getting over the craziness of THAT), a lot of people have asked, “Why a school BUS?” So. Why a school bus indeed? There are RV’s that are built for families and it would certainly be a lot easier to get something that is ready to go! We researched our options and there are several reasons we chose the bus route (ha. punny).
- Safety. Buses are one of the safest vehicles on the road. The were designed to keep our children safe and they are built to withstand almost anything. They have a steel frame and are survivors. BOOM. I don’t need my home crumpling in on me.
- Cost. A motor home the size our family would require would be as much or more than a comfortable family home with a yard. We aren’t looking to incur that kind of debt and one of the exciting things about this project is paying for it as we go, so we can travel without the stress of an RV mortgage. Our bus will be all paid for by the time we start traveling and therefore, the ongoing maintenance and costs will be very manageable.
- Customizable. We know what our family needs and does not need and we can customize this traveling home to be EXACTLY what we need. The exact number of beds, storage areas. We can prioritize space for things that are important to us (our dog, our board games, my guitar) and leave out things we never use (a microwave and big screen TV). We can create our floor plan based on details an RV company doesn’t know about us (like the fact that my 11 year old sleep walks and we need extra safeguards to make sure he doesn’t take a walk in the middle of the night). Plus, have you SEEN some of the lovely bus designs? Some of my favorites include The Good News Bus, Outside Found and Expedition Happiness.
I am more excited than I can say about this adventure. If you want to see the video episodes of our progress, check out this post Little Dream, Big Bus. To see more pictures of the conversion, check out my hubby’s blog!
